New CEO appointed

18 December 2012

The Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, Senator Joe Ludwig, today announced the appointment of Ms Kareena Arthy as the APVMA’s new chief executive officer (external site).

Ms Arthy was Managing Director, Biosecurity Queensland for five years after its inception in 2007. An economics graduate, her career began as an econometrician with the Australian Bureau of Statistics in Canberra before becoming a senior economic analyst with the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet. Ms Arthy spent 10 years in the vocational education and training sector in various leadership roles in economic analysis, strategic policy and planning, communications, stakeholder management and federal–state relations.

Outgoing CEO, Dr Eva Bennet-Jenkins, congratulates Ms Arthy on her appointment.  'I leave my role as CEO at the end of 2012 with the knowledge that the authority will be in good hands.  Ms Arthy will be supported by a unified, committed and innovative executive and a team of dedicated staff. The authority has a solid history of responding to challenge and change and is in good shape going forward.

'I’m grateful for the many opportunities I’ve had with the APVMA over the last 17 years and none more so than the opportunity to lead the Authority for the last five years.

'I would like to thank the APVMA’s Executive, the staff, the industry we regulate and our many stakeholders for their commitment to working with us cooperatively and collaboratively', Dr Bennet-Jenkins said.

Ms Arthy’s appointment is for five years from 1 January 2013. Until she starts work in late January, APVMA’s Veterinary Medicines Program Manager, Dr Allen Bryce, will act as chief executive officer.
