Supply of Unregistered Veterinary Products Attracts Significant Fine

Date: 26 October 2009
Ref: 2009/11

A Victorian manufacturer and supplier of companion animal products was fined last Friday (23 October) for a serious breach of Australian agricultural and veterinary chemical laws.

Vets All Natural Pty Ltd was fined $10,000 for supplying unregistered veterinary products and breaching conditions of its good manufacturing practice licence.

The court found that products supplied to the market by Vets All Natural Pty Ltd has not been assessed and registered by the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA).

“All agricultural chemicals and veterinary medicines offered for supply in Australia must have satisfied the Australian regulator that they can be used safely,” Mr Matthew, Program Manager (Regulatory Strategy &Compliance), with the APVMA said today.

“Companion animal owners and livestock farmers deserve to know that veterinary medicines offered in the marketplace are safe and effective.”

“Consumers can play an important role in ensuring that veterinary products they purchase have been assessed and are safe to use by checking registered products on PUBCRIS database.”

Importing or supplying unregistered agricultural and veterinary chemical products is an offence, punishable by significant fines - $165,000 for a company and individuals $33,000 and the APVMA has wide powers to recall, prevent supply, seize or dispose of unregistered chemicals.

“Anyone with information about the sale of unregistered agricultural chemicals or veterinary medicines can call our Compliance Hotline 1300 700 315 – Monday to Friday during normal office hours,” Mr Matthew said.
