What is EARs? - Backgrounder

The Electronic Application and Registration System (EARS), offers a new approach to submission of applications electronically. The electronic software system is a major advance in agvet chemical registration in Australia. It allows companies to conduct secure electronic transactions over the Internet in submitting applications to the APVMA.  It places Australia at the forefront of agvet chemical regulators internationally in embracing the use of information technology systems to conduct core business activities with their primary stakeholders.

Using EARS applicants can submit applications electronically to the APVMA for the registration of new agricultural or veterinary chemical products and/or variations to existing registered products. The EARS system is currently available for three application categories (8, 12 and 13) with others coming on line soon. The EARS software provides a streamlined system which allows users to compile applications with validation to help ensure a correct and complete application.  A secure encrypted connection over the Internet provides a fast and efficient method for lodging an application to the APVMA.  Applicants can use the system to make fee payments and check the status of their applications from preliminary assessment through to evaluation and granting of registration.

Through EARS the APVMA aims to reduce the time needed to prepare an application and help applicants get it right the first time, leading to fewer amendments after lodgment.  This will result in greater efficiency in progressing applications through preliminary assessment. The system will improve transparency by allowing applicants greater access to information about the progress of their application.
